The Nigerian Army has said some cultists, suspected to be members of
the Icelander Cult group, on Sunday, February 7, 2016, destroyed a gas
facility belonging to
the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) in Akala-Olu
village in Oshie community, Ahoada-West local government area of Rivers
State.
The army also accused notable politicians in the state of encouraging
cult groups with inciting comments that could lead to the breach of
public peace in state.
The assistant director, Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Nigerian
Army, Captain Eli Lazarus, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt
yesterday, said the cultists, who threatened to wreak more havoc if
their demands were not met, were actually demanding for the release of a
suspected cultist, Emmanuel Odum, who is undergoing interrogation over
involvement in pipeline vandalism and cultism.
He stated that the Nigerian Army will not cowed to do the bidding of
any criminal group warning that anyone caught in the act of vandalizing
critical national assets, such as oil and gas pipelines, would be
severely dealt with in accordance with the law.
Lazarus also warned politicians in the state to desist from
encouraging cult through inciting comments, especially as the state
prepares for the forthcoming rerun elections, or face the wrath of the
military as it has the capacity to deal with such politicians.
‘‘No one should be in doubt of the capacity of the military to deal
decisively with such persons. If anyone is caught breaching public
particularly, during the forthcoming elections, such persons should have
themselves to blame.
“Already, some suspected patrons and sponsors of these criminal
groups are being closely monitored by security agencies. Parents and
guardians are therefore strongly advised to warn their children.’’
